Following the task set- which required us to have a character walking through a door, sitting down and exchanging dialogue with another character set. The shots we needed to follow included the 108 degree rule, a match cut, a mixture of close ups, mid-shots and long shots and angled shots in our Preliminary Film exercise.
Analysis of the Match Cut Prelim: Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths
- Shots are carried out effectively
- Most of the shots are in focus
- Clear acting and dialogue can be heard
- Editing of shot reverse shot
- Use of different angles to emphasize power
- Different use of shots and camera techniques
- Differences in characters are clear cut
- Match cut looks very poor
- We could add in extra scenes so sequence is smoother
- One scene is extremely out of focus
- We could have added additional shots that are more variable- such as establishing shots or panning shots
- Movement of props differed in different shots
- Sequence is not fully smooth and seamless- it is jumpy in some places
Editing was pretty much a straight forward process- we had to select which ones were the best ones that had minimum or no mistakes done, or whichever looked the best. We then set it up chronologically on Final Cut Pro and exported it to a Quick Time file.
As we had little time to plan this and carry it out- it is not to our best standard. However, in that short amount of time we can learn from our mistakes and improve our skills even more so.
