An example of suspense created in the movie is just before the action (approx. 45mins into the movie) between 'The Killer' (named Anton Chigurgh) with the silence gun and the guy originally staying at the Motel (known as Llewelyn Moss). As Anton drives down the motorway on a hunt for Llewelyn, in the car seat next to him is a detector that senses the distance between him and Llewelyn. Before the detector starts to beep, there is the environmental sounds of the car engine. When the detector then starts to beep, it is at a very slow pace. The idea of this engages the audience within the action as they are anxious to find out if Anton finds Llewelyn. The closer he becomes, the faster the beep is and this idea portrays a heartbeat getting faster and creating the suspense.
The edits cut to and fro from Anton driving to Llewelyn building away at his piece of work. Therefore this is informing the audience not only what both characters are doing at this moment of time but how unaware Llewelyn is of danger and Anton is becoming anxious to find him.
With sound, the idea of silence throughout the scene shows how tense it is and how danger is near all the time. Aother obvious aspect is the facial expression which tells the audience that something bad is going to happen which is the build up along with edits and sound to suspense.
